Dental Extractions

What is a Dental Extraction?

A dental extraction is a procedure that involves removing a tooth usually because of infection, disease, trauma or crowding. A tooth extraction should be done as soon as possible to avoid the spread of infection and more serious problems. At Sardina Dental Group we do most extractions in office and because of Dr. Tom’s advanced equipment; it is a short, painless procedure. If needed, we offer Nitrous Oxide gas for those who may be nervous about the procedure.

Why would I need a tooth Extracted?

  • A tooth is abscessed (severe infection) and cannot be saved
  • A tooth is broken beyond repair
  • Major trauma to a tooth and it is very loose
  • A primary (baby) tooth that will not come out on its own
  • To many teeth in your mouth (crowded) and space is needed
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • A dental implant is needed to replace a severely worn tooth

How do I know if I need a tooth Extracted?

The best way to know if a tooth needs to be extracted is to visit the dentist. Only through radiographs (X-rays) and an exam can you and your dentist decide if an extraction is right for you. In some cases, the tooth may be saved with methods such as a root canal or crown lengthening. Only your dentist will be able to determine which method is best.

What to expect when getting a Dental Extraction.

  1. Anesthesia or “Novocain” will be given and we will not begin until the area is completely numb the entire process is done in a 1 short visit.
  2. During the process some pressure might be felt.
  3. Afterward cotton gauze will be placed on the extraction area and we will have you bite down the gauze, sutures may or may not be needed.
  4. Post extraction instructions will be given.
