What are oral hygiene checkups?

Routine dental checkups are vital to good oral hygiene and are the best way to detect problems at their earliest stages. Early detection and treatment saves unnecessary discomfort, time, and money. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends checkups twice a year. Oral needs change with age and the condition of your teeth and gums. Your Dentist may recommend a check-up schedule that is more or less frequent than twice a year.

Why do I need an Oral Hygiene Check-up?

Keeping our mouths hygienic and presentable not only offers us a helping hand in looking our best but it can help prevent many problems, not only orally but in general health as well. Gum disease, if left untreated can lead to some very serious problems, such as heart disease, infections and loss of bone mass so maintaining oral hygiene should be an integral part of life as important as a balanced diet and exercise regimen.

How do I know if I need an Oral Hygiene Check-up?

Tobacco, alcohol use, diabetes, pregnancy, periodontal and gum disease, poor oral hygiene and certain medical conditions are some of the many factors people are at a greater risk for oral diseases and should have dental checkups more than twice a year.

What to Expect for an Oral Hygiene Check-Up

  • An oral hygiene checkup takes about 1 hour in our office.
  • Necessary x-rays are taken.
  • The teeth are probed to check for any gum inflammation, recession, bleeding.
  • Teeth are thoroughly cleaned using the ultrasonic device then polished.
  • Oral cancer screening is done, along with Dr. Sardina‚Äôs exam.
  • Application of Fluoride is done after Dr. Sardina completes his exam.
