Root Canal Therapy

What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal Therapy (RCT) is a procedure that is done when a tooth is infected or abscessed. Anesthetic is given and the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth are clean out. Essentially the tooth is hollowed out. Afterward a medicine called Gutta Percha is placed inside the canals where the nerves and blood vessels once were.

When would I need a Root Canal?

  • Constant pain in a tooth or pain when biting or chewing
  • If a tooth is darkened or discolored and does not whiten
  • A “pimple” in the gums (gingiva) surrounding a tooth
  • Severe pain to hot or cold liquids or food
  • Swelling of the gums around a tooth

How do I know if I need Root Canal Therapy?

If a tooth is painful to hot or cold foods or liquids you may be a candidate for Root Canal Therapy. Also, if your tooth has a large hole in it, this could be a candidate. If you think you may have a tooth in need of Root Canal Therapy then visit us at 405 Main Street in Landisville, PA. An exam will be given along with a digital x-ray to analyze the tooth and determine what is needed.
